I think you do need to have a CPT for an intern. I was talking to my International Advisor about this yesterday and this is what he told me.

depends on your school. Some let you have it when you start. Must say, wait at least one semester. haven't heard about a year yet.

to my knowledge, off campus intern always requires cpt.yeh, its true ,u need to be in F1 visa for a year. However, this requirement is for undergrad only. You do not require to be enroll in school for a year to apply for cpt, if you are going for grad school or masters. The hard task is to find a program which offer internship in first year.hope this helps.Good luck.

And one more thing, the intern should be eligible for your major requirements or restricted electives requirement.

I am in grad school,  so seems I dont have to be in f1 visa for a year as i understand to get CPT.

There are lots of intern  opportunity in my field,  and in my university, just dont know if I will be able to grab one of them or not !

No you don't need a CPT to do any internships. As a matter of fact, you could even do internships without work permits...however, work permits ( Employment Authorization )would definitely ensure that you're following all the legal requirements!
